I installed a fresh 4.8.1 umbraco and changed the backend language for the admin to German. Unfortunately the translation has a lot of lacks and I want to change the most severe of them.
In the thread mentioned above people talk about the de.xml file in the config/lang directory. But there is no file. Where can I find the german translation in order to change it?

It's not in the /config/lang directory, but in the /umbraco/config/lang directory.
