    Courier From Live to Dev

    Hi,

Wonder if somebody could help me with a few questions about Courier. We haven't used it before so please forgive any stupid questions.

We have a site in a live environment and we need to pull a copy down from live to dev to replicate a bug, fix and reupload. We normally FTP necessary files and restore .bak file of db or run SQL scripts to download/upload database.

However we're having problems doing this for one reason or another.

So first question, can we now install Courier on live site and transfer from live to dev? and then once ready upload from dev up to live.

Regarding costs which option is the best to go for with Courier? Can we achieve what we want with the 99 Euro option?

What sort of access is used with Courier. Currently our client's site is within their network as its an intranet. I would think that we'd have to ask them to make it public facing so we can connect. Does it just connect using URL, username and password?

    Thanks in advance

    Ben

    You certainly can Ben.

When you use courier on a node, it is suppose to ask you if you want to Deploy or Update.  Deploy pushes out, Update pulls in.  Now, for some reason, I don't have this option :-)  But, I probebly just need to fix my configuration.

If you have an Umbraco.TV account, check out courier video 2:

As for your other question, I think Courier assumes that the admin username and password are the same on each site.  However, you customize it.  And you can customize each users access to Courier.  AND, if you want to get really tricky, you can even tweak the courier page.

    Excellent. Thanks Mitch.

    In answer to my question.

    Deploy to live

    Update from dev

    Looks great.

In what scenario is the more expensive license needed?

That I can't help you with.  We purchased the Umbraco Complete package, which included the full edition.

I guess it would depends on what is important to you... I'm sure you've seen the comparison page: http://umbraco.com/products/more-add-ons/courier-2/place-your-order.aspx

Great, thanks for your help Mitch. Looking into it I think we'll be ok with the 90 Euro option

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I think the subject is the same :-)

If you develop locally (i.e. on a local PC using a .local domain which is not accessible from the Internet) then it does not appear to be possible to do transfers both ways with Courier!?

I tried adding a "network" repository, expecting to be able to create a package on the Internet based site and then import that "package" into the local deve site. However, it appears that you are only allowed to create normal "URL" style connections with the Express version of Courier! Which pretty much means you can only transfer TO an Internet based installation.

An extra 350 euros seems quite a lot just to have the "network" repository feature!
