    Security requirement for our website to use an API rather than direct DB connect

    We have a security requirement for our website to use an API rather than a direct connection to database. I see there is an API for Umbraco, but this seems to be for managing the website rather than using it for an N-tier like architecture to separate the website and database via web services. Is this possible? Thanks
