Not used Vendr since 1.x however we have a couple of projects coming up that I'm considering vendr for. One question is if Vender can use a separate db from umbraco. The reason is due to potential high order volume (100's per week).

From Vendr v3 which is being released this week (but the RC is available now) yes.
